HubSpot Outlines How to Benchmark AI Search Visibility

HubSpot says marketers need citation and share-of-voice measures to assess AI search visibility alongside traditional search metrics.

Measuring results remains a challenge for marketers working on answer engine optimization, according to HubSpot’s State of AEO 2026 report. Among B2B marketers surveyed, 23% identified measurement as their leading challenge. For B2C marketers, 26% cited measurement, while 29% pointed to understanding how AEO works.

HubSpot’s guide argues that conventional search indicators do not capture the full picture of visibility in AI-generated answers. Google Search Console clicks and impressions, as well as website visits, show aspects of search and site performance, but they do not establish whether an answer engine names a brand or cites its content. They also do not show how frequently those appearances occur relative to competitors.

The distinction matters because traditional search rankings describe where a page appears on a results page. AEO focuses instead on whether a brand or its content appears within an answer assembled by an AI system. A strong position in conventional search therefore answers a different question from a benchmark of presence in generated responses.

HubSpot separates brand mentions from citations. A mention names a company in an answer without linking to a source. A citation provides an attributed reference or linked URL; for the guide’s brand-level measure, that reference or URL comes from the brand’s own domain. Tracking the two separately helps clarify whether a brand is being named, cited, or both.

The guide recommends using citation rate and share of voice as part of a repeatable benchmarking process, alongside normalization across platforms and prompts. It also calls for reporting that leadership can understand. The aim is to move beyond isolated prompt checks and give marketing teams a way to compare visibility with competitors and follow results over time.

AI-generated search features can also affect the relationship between visibility and clicks. Ahrefs found that the presence of a Google AI Overview was associated with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page in its December 2025 analysis. That finding describes a correlation, not proof that the overview caused the decline.

What this means for marketers

Keep traditional search reporting, but assess it alongside AI answer visibility rather than treating the two as interchangeable. Separate mentions from citations, compare results with competitors, and use consistent benchmarks that can be explained to leadership. Repeating the assessment can make changes more useful to track than a single set of prompt checks.
